A new generation bings a new hope to bring back the classics
Despite having awesome new IPs like Horizon Zero Dawn, Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima and the The Order 1887 we can’t help but think that there is some key franchises that have been totally missing in action since the Playstation 2 and Playstation 3 times.
With the Playstation 5 coming out this year, it means that the hope is back on the menus boys! Especially with the Demon Souls remake coming out as a launch title, it give us the most needed confidence to everyone here at Hyped Pixels that Sony might just bring back some of these old franchises…
5 – Sly Cooper
Oh Sly, where have you been after all these years? With the studio behind Sly Cooper recently having a massive success with Ghost of Tsushima, we are not sure if we are ever gonna be able to see Sly Cooper making a return at a glorious 4K 60FPS.
Sucker Punch seem to have become more and more interested in realistic games rather than cartoon ones, we can even say that Sucker Punch has fell in the same trap as Naughty Dog did back in the day with Uncharted, to completely leave their cartoon franchises behind.
However there is still hope, recently Sucker Punch Studios has been recruiting for a second team at their studio! Let’s hope that it’s something related to Sly Cooper and not a new IP!
Here at Hyped Pixels we are big Sly fans, we were so excited about that Sly Cooper movie that was supposed to come out… Does anyone know what happened to that?
4 – The Getaway
Who doesn’t remember The Getaway from London Studios? This amazing open world that featured a no HUD gameplay, was among one of my favourite games on the Playstation 2 era.
One of the things that drove people to love The Getaway, was the fact that the game used the blinkers in the cars to point where you should be going next to progress in the game. But we won’t stop a the gameplay elements, what about the amazing world building around the game main character which was London itself!
The Getaway : Black Monday the direct sequel to the original game featured among the best voice actors during this generation paired with an amazing cinematography on the pre rendered cutscenes.
For all we know Getaway 3 that was revealed during E3 ended up being cancelled for the PS3, for those wondering what London Studios have been up to.. They have recently released Blood & Truth on PSVR, the game takes part in the Getaway universe for those curious.
Is there any chance to see it reappearing in the Playstation 5? For sure! London Studios have been recruiting hard for upcoming project, which we still don’t know anything about.
3 – SOCOM
SOCOM has a special place in my heart as it was one of the first games I have ever played online back in the Playstation 2 era. Who can’t forget using dial up internet to play their console games alongside the adapter that you had to buy separately?
The last two SOCOM games released on the Playstation 3 and they were nothing like the original games, however after a couple of updates or should we say “Live Service” cycle, SOCOM : Confrontation became a really good tactical shooter on the Playstation 3
Despite Zipper Interactive not being around after MAG being shutdown and the studio disbanded, there are still big chances SOCOM will get to see the light of the day again. Recently there have been rumours saying that Guerrilla Games is attempting to revive the SOCOM IP, this rumours came to light after Rainbow Six Siege Lead Designer was hired by Guerrilla Games.
2 – Syphon Filter
Who doesn’t remember Gabriel Logan and his taser putting enemies on fireback on the original Playstation? This franchise was created by Eidetic and published 989 Studios who you may know these days by Sony Bend, yep that’s right the developers behind the recent zombie game juggernaut Days Gone.
Funny enough this is one of those games that might come back at some point, since Days Gone the latest game by Sony Bend is set in the same world as Syphon Filter! Surprise surprise for those who didn’t knew that! We can even say that it might be a sequel to the last game in franchise.
Other than that we hope Syphon Filter comes back, due to the fact that most stealth games like Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell have completely vanished from the map. The only stealth game we currently have from the old days is Hitman.
1 – Jak and Daxter
Here we go! It’s the number 1 and it couldn’t be anyone else other than our favourite partners Jak and Daxter. Oh man where to start with these two am I right? Jak and Daxter was such an awesome game from Naughty Dog, coming off from Crash Bandicoot we never thought they could have delivered a game even better than that one but they did not once but three times!
We recently got a Jak and Daxter “tease” or should we say “reminder” that it exists, back in April during the “Road to Playstation 5” video where Mark Cerny himself talked a bit behind the design of Haven City in Jak 2 and how it was made possible at the time with the Playstation 2 hardware limitations.
Does that mean J&D are coming? We don’t know, ever since Naughty Dog has departed from cartoon games with Uncharted : Drake’s Fortune we never saw them attempting another Jak and Daxter. At some point they did concept a Jak and Daxter game, but turns out that they didn’t felt they could deliver the game they envisioned.
With Ratchet and Clank coming back with Rift Apart (coming back as in going back to the main canonical storyline following up on the last sequel on the Playstation 3) there might be some hope for J&D.
With all this being said, what franchise would you like to see returning on the Playstation 5? You know ours, so tell us yours in the comment section below!
